In Hanoi, the weather and temperature, the amount of rain and climate are unlike any other areas in Vietnam. Although Hanoi is the centre of the north of Vietnam, but Hanoi temperature is obviously different to sub-areas such as Sapa in Lao Cai, Dong Van and Meo Vac in Ha Giang, Cao Bang and Ha Long Bay, Hai Phong, Trang An in Ninh Binh, ect...

However, Hanoi climate is typical for the Red River Delta.

In Hanoi, the prominent feature about climate and temperature is tropical monsoon climate (in summer, the weather is hot and sunny. There are lots of rains. In winter, the weather is cold, it is hardly rain and the humidity rapidly decrease)

However, in Vietnam, specially in Hanoi, the amount of rains is rather high comparing to the countries in Northern Europe, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, Japan and so on. That is why in Hanoi, the air humidity is never lower than 70 percents, the average rainfall is about 1.500-1.700 milimeters and if there are 365 days per year, the number of day which has rain in Hanoi is about 145 days.

If Ho Chi Minh city as well as the South of Vietnam only has two seasons in a year, include: rainy season (from May to November) and dry season (from December to April of the next year), so Hanoi has four obvious seasons, include: spring (the beginning of a year, last from February to April), summer (from early May to July or August), autumn (from late August to October) and winter (from November to January or February). If you visit Hanoi in summer (from May to July) the weather would be hot and sunny for days. The temperature is alway high in summer and in the afternoon, it often has rain-storm (or whirlwind) and heavy rain. Read more: Hanoi rainy season

The reason why in summer, Hanoi often has rain with thunderstorms is Hanoi weather is affected by the Southeast monsoon, the intertropical convergence zone, storms and tropical depression.

In spring and autumn, Hanoi weather is very cool and comfortable. It often wet and there are some cold winds in spring. Autumn, on the other hand, has fresh air and a little drier than spring. There are few clouds but the sunshine is moderate. It rarely rains in Autumn.

However, when it turns into winter, Hanoi weather is very cold, the weather may drop to as low as 9-10 degree Celsius. From November to March in the next year, Hanoi weather is cold and there are few rain. Heavy winds from the Northeast bring the cold of the ice sheet in the central of Asian continent with them. In Hanoi, January is the month which not only has the lowest average temperature of the year (over 16 degree Celsius) but also has the lowest average rainfall of the year (under 10 milimeters). March, April and October are known as the time for changing season in a year.

However, because of the strong effect of monsoon, the beginning and ending time of seasons does not remain the same each year, so the division of months is only relative. That is why in Hanoi, some years, winter comes early than other years.

Until now, the lowest temperature in Hanoi which has been recorded is 2.7 degree Celsius. And the highest temperature in Hanoi has been recorded is 43.7 degree Celsius. Morever, due to the influence of urban and greenhouse effects, on summer heat waves,you might feel that the actual temperature is always higher than the one which you could measure, it might reach to 50 degree Celsius.

Although the temperature in Hanoi is also low but it is still much more comfortable than the central of continient or the northern hemisphere.
